A Different Kind Of Swarm
02.23.12 (11:08 am)   [edit]
Dozens of earthquakes causde a swarm today on the Big Island. Over 60 quakes, a 3.2 and lots higher than 2.0. I didn't feel any of them perhaps because I am about 50 miles (as the crow flies) from the volcano.

Near the volcano, these swarms may indicate more lava flows underground.

The National Park cancelled a lava tour today because of the quakes.

Last Thursday I missed it I guess, but there was a 1.7 quake almost under my house. I just measured and found it was 2600 feet from the house. Of course, I feel the big ones but smaller ones can always be missed. My house is on pier and post (stilts) so even the dogs jumping on the lanai (porch) can cause a bit of shaking.

Another 4.3 quake overnight. I missed that one too.
