The Old Days
08.19.04 (5:17 am)   [edit]
The other day I heard a man mention the name "Jerry Lewis". His son said, "Oh, the Telethon guy?". Seems his son only knew Jerry from his latter TV days of fighting disease. All the son may know of Dean Martin is that he got roasted on the TV commercial.

It used to be that kids would gather around the radio to listen to radio plays. Then television came along and kids would plop in front of the glowing screen, mesmerized by the sights. Then it was the computer and the handheld computer game.

Many old timers remember radio shows, and luckily, many of those shows are now archived on tape and CD for us to enjoy again.

I guess it takes a special kind of person to sit without a remote control or keyboard in our hands and concentrate on anything for any length of time. It IS a fun thing if you can get the hang of it though.

Some shows started out on radio (perhaps with an audience) and moved onto TV or the big screen. These names would be familiar to many older people, names such as Lucile Ball, Our Miss Brooks, Dragnet, Burns and Allen, Superman and Amos and Andy.

"War of the Worlds" was a radio broadcast that scared America while decades later, Paul Harvey would inform us with the "Rest of the Story". There were musical shows and mysteries, and lots of science fiction.

Many of the movie rental stores have audio sections and perhaps there is a rental that might interest you. You might find them for sale online (like Ebay). Look for "OTR" or "Old Time Radio" or "radio shows". Occasionally there is a radio station, which plays the old time shows. Perhaps you have cassettes or recordings of your own. Why not bring them out and listen, or perhaps, share them?

Whether Goes the Weather
08.16.04 (11:10 am)   [edit]
Florida has had its share of weather and I bet they would love to just have some sunshine for a while. My Sister was in the Daytona Beach area and experienced her first hurricane. In my life I’ve been near a few and also been way too close to a number of tornados, but Sis has not, until now.

What better place to ride out the storm (having already sold her house back there) was in a hotel room on the ocean side of the building… She saw people from the office keep going outside and looking at the cars and there were car alarms were going off. When Sis ended up going downstairs she discovered that most if not all of the car windows had been destroyed. There was sand and water in the vehicles, but I don’t know if they were sandblasted or debris got them. Signs were bent over and she saw plows plowing debris out of the roads so people could get through.

Back here in Captain Cook we have had a bit of sun and a bit of rain. Last night the outdoor temperature plummeted a few degrees lower than normal and I had to pull the blanket a bit closer to me. Gosh, it must have dropped to 65 degrees last night…

On the other “weather front”, I’m wondering WHETHER the mortgage company’s underwriter is finally going to approve the mortgage. The trust and I have done everything they have asked and this particular transaction is getting very old. It has taken a year and a half so far and I would love to start paying them some interest.

I was up island over the weekend, having someone help me with my accounting. I had to make sure that I am assigning all my expenses and income in the right columns. I have saved all of the receipts and need to sort and enter them now.

Of course, there is little income yet, but that is mainly because I have not “officially” opened the website wide open. I’m still tweaking and adjusting, getting my processes in place and making sure everything works. The site is already in some search engines, but not very high in the keyword search. That will change soon also as I submit it to all of them.

A Blog reader took advantage of my offer of coffee and should be receiving it soon!

Last night I signed up for a hotel program upgrade that will give me a cheap 25,000 frequent flier miles (almost enough for a trip to Hawaii – or FROM it and back). Even with the threat of Delta going bankrupt, most companies come out of Chapter 11 in better shape. Now that “Leo” is gone, Delta has a better chance. It was quite idiotic how they handled their business of late.

Airlines created a frequent flier program as an affinity program – that is, encourage people to fly one airline and then reward them. Subway does the same thing; buy a sub and get stickers. Collect enough stickers and you get a free meal. So Delta had such a program and it seems quite good. THEN, in some convoluted cost cutting move, they decide to change the program so drastically, that these people who were their best and most loyal customers left in droves. We were the customers who had our companies book us on Delta so that we could continue getting these perks and miles. We would fly (as I did) just for the fun of it, to get miles. People would fly “mileage runs” which were low cost routes to increase miles so we could keep status with the airline. We were “flying idiots” until the changes, when Delta got us to stop flying and we became just run of the mill “idiots”. They told the government they needed a handout and blamed 9-11 for their woes when we frequent fliers knew the REAL reason why we weren’t flying.

With companies like this, there is always an uproar when the company does poorly and the upper management is giving themselves lots of compensation.

Time will tell whether they can weather the storm!

Well????
08.08.04 (11:16 am)   [edit]
I've been away from the blog for a while, but it has been on my mind.

Recently we have had tremendous rains here in Kona and across the other islands. The farm who roasts my coffee has had it very bad. The road in front of them was covered when rocks and mud flowed across the street and closed it. That is the main (and only) road from the town of Kona to the south. Luckily, the road department was able to open it quickly. SInce many of the resorts have staff who live t othe south of Kona, many of them were late to work that day.

Speaking of coffee, I just had 30 pounds of it roasted in a Full City Plus. Seems many people like that roast level. I particularly like it a bit weaker, but then again, it is the customer who determines what roast I supply. Unlike Henry Ford. When he came up with his first car, it was black in color. When asked if a customer could get it in any other color, he replied "An American can have their Model T in any color as long as it's Black".

When I would call a friend in Maryland, he would ask, "Well?" meaning, "Well, did you EVER get that darn coffee website up and running?" The answer is YES, yes I did. I opened it quietly and within a day, received my first order. Seems I had friends constantly checking the site; waiting to buy coffee. THANKS!

Although the site http://ItsKona.Com still is not perfect, it works and you are welcome to take a look. I sell 100% Kona Coffee, both roasted and unroasted. I prefer to sell "whole bean" coffee, which means that YOU grind what you want, when you are ready. That gives you a fresher coffee. To generate a bit of interest, anyone who reads this blog is welcome to get a tBLOG discount, just order 8oz or 16oz bags of roasted coffee and use TBLOG as the checkout discount code. What better way to spend the day then read blogs here and sip great coffee! (So far I am only shipping to the US only).

I made yet another call to the mortgage company the other day, escalating my woes to the next level of management. They are STILL not approving the loan and I am afraid I may have to take action against them. This has drug on for a year and a half so far and I have run out of time to be going to another mortgage company now. If they had not kept promising me all along, I would have changed companies long ago. I am limited in my choices though because the land is leasehold. I COULD pay cash for the property, but then I would have little to no spare cash to eat... so I prefer to get a mortgage!
